U.S. Workshop Tour — July 2016

Registration is now open for Modern Calligraphy Workshops in California, Massachusetts, and Maine! Beginner and Intermediate level classes offered.

My Modern Calligraphy Workshops are hands-on, using traditional calligraphy materials such as pointed nibs, pen holders and ink. All the supplies you'll need, including a beautifully-packaged kit and Plurabelle's own Letter Specimen Handbook & Resource Guide for you to keep, are included in the ticket price.

For my Beginner Workshops, absolutely no previous calligraphy experience is required. Whether you will be picking up a calligraphy pen for the very first time or are seeking hands-on instruction to enhance your existing, beginner-level calligraphy skills, this class is right for you!

In my Intermediate Workshops, whether you've taught yourself or learned from a teacher, if you can hold a calligraphy pen and write full words then this class is right for you! (If you've ever taken one of my beginner workshops then you definitely qualify.) Intermediate classes focus on writing with gouache, calligraphy’s most versatile color medium, and how to achieve opaque white lettering on dark paper. Emphasis will be placed on refining and playing with letterforms – both upper and lowercase – with guidance on how to create your own unique style. I will also discuss troubleshooting techniques for common issues faced by working calligraphers.

Beginner Workshop Tour – Boston, MA & Blue Hill, ME – January 2016

Great news!

Registration is now open for three Beginner Calligraphy Workshops in New England next month.

Join me in January for one of these cozy classes (or gift a ticket to someone dying to get started in modern calligraphy!). We'll cover all the basics you need to get started, from holding the pen to writing the complete lowercase alphabet. My workshops are hands-on, using all the traditional materials such as pointed nibs, pen holders, and sumi ink. You'll also walk away with a complete Plurabelle Beginner Supply Kit and Plurabelle's own Letter Specimen Handbook & Resource Guide, distributed exclusively to students in my classes.

Absolutely no previous calligraphy experience is required. However, if you do have a little bit of knowledge already, I'll be able to give you feedback based on the work I see on your paper. Students in the past who've had a little experience coming into my beginner-level classes have still found the lessons helpful for learning new techniques and correcting old habits.

Kelly & Michael's Hollywood Deco Wedding

This letterpressed invitation suite was written entirely in custom calligraphy and printed on luscious 220lb cotton Lettra in a combination of black ink and gold foil. The wedding theme, which drove the design, was Old Hollywood Deco, with hints of Moroccan influence. Kelly & Michael were married at the Colony Palms Hotel in Palm Springs, California, a location rich with patterns, textures, and colors that we used as inspiration. The envelope liner was a custom pattern based on the ballroom’s tiled floor, the black-on-gold foiling was reminiscent of the décor and the emerald green edge painting of each piece spoke to Santa Barbara’s lush greenery.

Printing by the fabulous Czar Press.

• A peek behind the scenes: the process of envelope addressing from a pile of handwritten lists and Excel sheets to a neat stack of calligraphed envelopes.

• From sketch to polished calligraphy: lyrics from a client's wedding song calligraphed in black with shimmering gold accents

• A snapshot of my May 17th boston workshop

• White on black – my all-time favorite combination!

• A passage by my favorite author, Virginia Woolf, from her book The Waves. When I took the snapshot of it outside on my porch, the railing cast a beautiful — and oddly appropriate — shadow across the paper.

Two Los Angeles Workshops

In April I will be leading two beginner-level workshops in Los Angeles. Each 3-hour class will cover the basics of modern script calligraphy, from holding the pen to writing the complete lowercase alphabet. Absolutely no previous calligraphy experience is required. The workshops are hands-on using all the traditional materials such as pointed nibs, pen holders and ink. All the supplies you'll need for the workshop, including a take-home kit and packet of letter samples, are included in the ticket price.

As with all my workshops, I'm only booking it for a very small class (which means lots of individual attention!), so I expect the spaces to fill up quickly.
